English firm 77 Sports have announced a major investment in newly promoted Maltese Premier League side Birżebbuġa St Peter’s.
77 Sports, which is a global sports platform operating at the intersection of sports entertainment, strategic advisory, and club ownership, said in a statement that it acquired an 80 per cent stake in Birżebbuġa SP’s operating entity.
This investment is the first of its kind in Malta since the government passed the Sports Private Limited Liability Companies Regulations.
The news is a major lift for the Saints who on Thursday rewrote the club’s history books after they won promotion to the Premier League for the first time after defeating Swieqi United in a penalty shoot-out.
“The transaction sees 77 Sports acquire an 80% stake in the club’s operating entity, marking the beginning of an ambitious long-term strategy to transform Birżebbuġa St Peter’s FC into one of the most progressive and commercially innovative football clubs in the Mediterranean region,” the statement said.
“The move is the first major step in 77 Sports’ wider vision to identify high-potential football assets, unlock untapped commercial value, and build globally connected clubs capable of thriving in the modern era of sport.”

The statement emphasized that under the new ownership structure, 77 Sports will lead all commercial and strategic operations, including sponsorship growth, international partnerships, capital strategy, revenue expansion, and organisational development.
77 Sports made it clear that the club’s administration will continue to oversee the sporting matters.
Ketan Makwana, executive chairman of 77 Sports, said: “Football is entering a new era. Clubs that think globally, move faster, and build smarter will define the future.
“Birzebbuġa St Peter’s FC has the heritage, community, and potential to become something far bigger than many realise. Our role is to provide strategy, capital pathways, and commercial execution to help unlock that future.
This is not just an investment in one club. It is the start of a broader platform designed to create long-term value across football.”
On his part, Joseph Fenech, the Birżebbuġa SP president, said that this agreement mark the start of a new era at the club.
“This partnership opens a new chapter for our club. We are proud of our identity and history, and we now have a partner with the ambition and expertise to help us grow beyond traditional limits.
“Together, we want to create opportunities for our players, supporters, and community while building a Club that can compete with confidence in a changing football landscape.”
The statement added that this partnership introduces a modern governance model, performance accountability, commercial acceleration, and a clear roadmap for growth. Priorities will include strengthening operations, expanding fan engagement, attracting international partners, and building a sustainable platform for sporting success.
