Founded in 1946, Birżebbuġa St. Peter’s Football Club has proudly represented the southern coastal town of Birżebbuġa for eight decades. Originally established as St. Peter’s Football Club, the organisation was named in honour of Saint Peter, the patron saint of Birżebbuġa, reflecting the club’s strong connection to the town’s identity, traditions and community.

From its earliest days, the club was built upon a passion for football, determination and a sense of belonging. What began as a modest sporting organisation gradually developed into an important institution within the local community, bringing together generations of players, officials, volunteers and supporters.

The club joined the Malta Football Association in 1946, beginning its journey through the Maltese football league system. Its formative years presented several challenges, including a period between 1947 and 1950 when the club was unable to field a competitive team.

Nevertheless, the determination of those involved ensured that St. Peter’s would continue to grow, laying the foundations for the achievements that followed.

The First Achievements — 1950s and 1960s

The 1953/54 season marked the first major milestone in the club’s history. St. Peter’s enjoyed an outstanding campaign in the Third Division, winning their section before defeating Little Rainbows 1–0 in the championship decider.

This historic victory secured the Third Division Championship and promotion to the second tier of Maltese football, an extraordinary achievement for a club still in its early years.

Following two seasons at that level, St. Peter’s returned to the Third Division, where the club continued to compete with determination.

Further success arrived during the 1960s, with the club lifting the Third Division Knock-Out Cup in both the 1960/61 and 1964/65 seasons.

These early achievements established St. Peter’s as a respected competitor in Maltese football and created memories that would become an important part of the club’s heritage.

Building an Identity — 1970s to 2000s

Throughout the following decades, the club experienced the challenges and successes associated with football in Malta’s lower divisions.

Despite changing circumstances, one element remained constant: the strong bond between the football club and the people of Birżebbuġa.

In the summer of 1985, an important step was taken when the club officially incorporated the name of its hometown, becoming Birżebbuġa St. Peter’s Football Club.

This change strengthened its identity as a sporting representative of the town and its people.

The club continued to pursue sporting success, eventually securing further Third Division championships during the 1997/98 and 2005/06 seasons.

Beyond results on the pitch, these decades were defined by the commitment of successive committees, coaches, players and supporters, whose dedication helped preserve the club and prepare it for future generations.

A Return to the Second Tier — 2011

In 2011, Birżebbuġa St. Peter’s achieved a significant milestone by securing promotion to the Maltese First Division, ending a 55-year absence from the second tier of Maltese football.

The achievement represented a moment of immense pride for the club and the entire Birżebbuġa community.

The Saints remained in the First Division for four seasons before being relegated in 2015. Although this marked another challenging period, the club continued working towards its long-term development and sporting ambitions.

During the following years, emphasis was placed on strengthening the football structure, improving facilities and supporting the development of young footballers.

Through its association with the Birżebbuġa Windmills Youth Nursery, the club has continued to recognise the importance of nurturing future generations and creating opportunities for young players to develop their abilities.

The Beginning of a Historic Rise — 2024/25

The 2024/25 season will forever hold a special place in the history of Birżebbuġa St. Peter’s FC.

Under the guidance of head coach Edgar Degabriele, the Saints produced an outstanding campaign in the IZIBET National Amateur League 1.

On 13 April 2025, the club was crowned league champion following an impressive 2–0 victory over Vittoriosa Stars in the championship decider at the Victor Tedesco Stadium.

The triumph confirmed the Saints’ return to the Challenge League after ten seasons away from the second tier.

However, the celebrations did not end there.

On 11 May 2025, Birżebbuġa St. Peter’s secured the BOV Amateur Super Cup, defeating Victoria Hotspurs 1–0 after extra time at the Centenary Stadium.

The victory completed a memorable league and cup double, demonstrating the determination, unity and ambition that had developed within the club.

More importantly, it marked the beginning of an extraordinary period in the club’s history.

Making History — Promotion to the Premier League in 2026

The 2025/26 season became the most historic chapter in the club’s existence.

Following their promotion from the National Amateur League, Birżebbuġa St. Peter’s entered the BOV Challenge League with a determination to compete and continue progressing.

What followed was an exceptional campaign that brought the club closer than ever to Malta’s highest level of football.

On 23 April 2026, eighty years after its foundation, Birżebbuġa St. Peter’s achieved something that previous generations had only dreamed of: promotion to the Malta Premier League for the very first time.

The historic achievement came following a dramatic promotion decider against Swieqi United at the Centenary Stadium.

After falling behind early in the encounter, the Saints responded through Daniel Zerafa, whose equaliser restored parity. With the score remaining 1–1 after extra time, the match was decided by a penalty shootout.

Birżebbuġa emerged victorious, winning 7–6 on penalties and securing their place among Malta’s football elite.

The final whistle sparked unforgettable celebrations among players, technical staff, club officials and supporters.

For the first time in eighty years, Birżebbuġa St. Peter’s would compete at the highest level of Maltese football.

The achievement also completed a remarkable journey of back-to-back promotions, taking the club from the third tier to the Premier League in just two seasons.

Another Trophy — BOV Challenge Cup Winners

Only days after securing their historic promotion, the Saints added another prestigious honour to their collection.

On 3 May 2026, Birżebbuġa St. Peter’s faced Melita FC in the BOV Challenge Cup Final at the National Stadium, Ta’ Qali.

Producing a confident and determined performance, the Saints claimed an impressive 3–0 victory, with goals from Alex Bruno, Paul Lapira and Zachary Cassar.

The triumph provided a fitting conclusion to an unforgettable season, as the club celebrated both Premier League promotion and cup success.

The 2025/26 campaign will be remembered as a defining moment in the history of Birżebbuġa St. Peter’s FC.

Eighty Years of Pride — A New Era

The year 2026 also marked the club’s 80th anniversary, celebrating eight decades of football, dedication and community spirit.

To commemorate this historic occasion and symbolise a new beginning, Birżebbuġa St. Peter’s introduced a redesigned club crest in June 2026.

The modern emblem preserves the club’s identity while incorporating important elements of its heritage, including Saint Peter’s crossed keys, a football, the club’s initials and laurel branches representing achievement and ambition.

Maintaining a strong connection to the club’s traditional colours and values, the new crest reflects a modern identity built upon eighty years of history.

On 14 August 2026, another historic moment arrived when Birżebbuġa St. Peter’s made their Malta Premier League debut against Floriana FC at the Centenary Stadium.

For the club, the occasion represented far more than the beginning of a new football season. It was the realisation of a dream built upon decades of commitment, sacrifice and perseverance.
